Wes said...: Question... I noticed Biko says "do chuid Ghaeilge". Can he let me know what the difference between a lenited "Ghaeilge" and an unlenited "Gaeilge" might be in this situation? They both seem right to me, and appear to be used equally elsewhere.; July 3, 2007 at 1:54 PM
Máire said...: He's being taciturn right now, and I can't put my finger on the distinction between the two. So I guess I can't explain it. It was kind of a gut thing, which means possibly not according to the letter of the law. Possibly because "cuid" is feminine and so patterns like "cuid mhór" and "cuid mhaith" are set in my mind.

Máire said...: Okay, I finally had time to locate my arbiter, which indicates that the phrase would in my dialect be "do chuid Gaeilge," so I've redone it. Still no idea why half the natural language examples out there have it the other way, though.; July 6, 2007 at 9:16 PM

Máire said...: Actually I thought of that after our last go-'round on this, and it still haunts me! HAUNTS ME. Because after all, he's supposed to be correcting the Irish!
