Interesting -- it's a fine example of how leathan le leathan agus caol le caol doesn't necessarily hold in spelling across boundaries in compound words (cos "foot" + liacht "medicine")... but according to my Foclóir Póca the "s" is pronounced as slender!

That's interesting, and I suppose not unexpected. "Mas é do hoil é" for example, although not technically in the same word, uses a slender s because of the neighbouring slender vowel

Another example is the word for "gay", which is "aerach". I've been trying to dig up an etymology for that one, given that this is gay pride week in Mpls. It looks like "airy" or something along those lines, but I wonder how it came about. Yeah... broad r.
